Identity Crisis

Note: This story is currently in progress... stay tuned for the complete version, which will be posted as soon as it is finished and has been reviewed by my beta readers. For now, I've posted the first scene as a hint as to what will come.

Jack groaned as the alarm went off, reaching over to slap the annoying buzzer as he yawned and sat up, swinging his long legs over the edge of the bed.  He felt sluggish and stiff, his muscles victims of the previous week's inactivity.  A smile spread across his face as he remembered how he had spent that week: lying on the beach, reading, and watching lovely, bikini-clad women cavort in the surf.  It was a nice change of pace from his usual itinerary of exploring strange planets and fighting hostile aliens.

Jack had spent his vacation driving along the California coast in a rented convertible, stopping over in Los Angeles on his last night so he could catch a hockey game at the arena.  The Colorado team had won handily, providing a fitting end to his week off, but now he had to think about easing his vacationing body back into its usual routine.  On his ride to the arena the day before, he had spotted a large park a few blocks from his hotel that looked like it would suit his purpose perfectly.  Quickly donning his running gear, Jack headed for the hotel gym to stretch through his warm-up exercises and ready himself for a short run before breakfast.

MacGyver opened one eye and looked at the clock.  It was seven a.m., his usual rising time, but instead of getting out of bed, he rolled back over and closed his eyes.  He had been working late at the office the previous night catching up on paperwork, and since Saturday nights were fairly quiet there, he found he could get more work done without the noise and interruptions that plagued most work days.  It had been nearly two a.m. when he had finally finished and come home, and MacGyver decided that the world could wait another couple of hours for his presence, especially on a Sunday morning.

To be continued...
