Lonely is the Nightmare
Note: This is only the opening sequence... yes, I know, I hate teasers, too but this story is scheduled to be published in the MacGyver Virtual Season 10, which is currently in production. This story will be see in its entirety at the end of the season -- it's the season finale cliffhanger -- and will be available at the Mac VS website, www.macvs.com.
MacGyver stared at the fishing pole longingly. He had really wanted to go fishing this weekend, but Sam was on assignment in Germany, Jack had cargo flights to Vancouver every weekend for the next few months, Willis had said something about attending a computer show, and Pete ... well, Pete "had other plans". Lately, Pete had 'other plans' every time MacGyver invited him to do anything. MacGyver sighed. He could still go fishing if he wanted, but he wasn't in the mood to go alone. With a final look at the fishing pole, he shut the closet door and walked away.
MacGyver dropped onto the couch and picked up the television remote. After flipping through all of the channels twice and finding nothing interesting to watch, he clicked off the television and stared at the blank screen, feeling bored and restless... and the weekend hadn't even started yet. MacGyver reached for the phone, determined to find something to do this weekend. The phone rang just as his hand touched the receiver.
"Hello?" he answered.
"Hi, Mac. It's Willis," his friend answered.
"Hey, buddy. What's up?"
"You busy tonight, Mac?"
"Nope," MacGyver answered, noting the slight edge to the quiet scientist's voice.
"How about we grab some dinner, maybe catch the game?" Willis suggested.
"Sure."
"The usual place?" Say, half an hour?"
"Sounds like a plan," MacGyver replied.
"See you then," Willis said.
"Bye." MacGyver hung up the phone slowly. Whenever Willis suggested dinner at 'the usual place', it meant that he had something important to discuss -- something he want overheard by any potentially hostile parties.
MacGyver smiled as he reached for his coat. Things had been quiet around the Phoenix Foundation since the situation with Mitchell Harding. He figured that the Alliance was laying low to avoid any additional scrutiny from federal authorities, who had been persistent in tracking down Harding's business associates. Somehow, they had managed to eradicate any evidence linking Phoenix to the corrupt businessman, a situation that had completely frustrated Willis and himself. Now, though, it sounded like Willis might have found another clue in their fight against the Alliance. MacGyver chuckled to himself. A little intrigue was just what he needed to spice up his weekend.
To be continued....
